Daxton's Mario Themed Birthday Party

Daxton really wanted a Mario themed birthday this party, so a Mario Birthday Party we gave him.  We did his birthday party several days before his birthday so his best friend, Davis, could be there, because he was going to be out of town on Dax's actual birthday.  Surprisingly enough finding stuff for a Mario party was harder than I thought. I had to get most my stuff from google images and create my own stuff.  The only party favor I had that had to do with Mario was a Wii remote candy dispenser, then we just added some of Daxton's favorite Candy into the favor bags.  Here is the table set up.  We did mushroom cupcakes.  He wanted me to do red and green cupcakes with white in the middle and then an "M" or "L" in the middle of each one for Mario and Luigi (funny that he had such a strong opinion about it), but I tried it and it just wasn't working out, so I convinced him that the mushrooms were a good idea.

Thanks to the Internet I found some great game ideas.  I got this "Yoshi Egg Smash" idea from a blog I found.  I blew out the yoke of all these eggs and then painted them to look like Yoshi's eggs.
Then I drew this picture of Yoshi for the kids to throw the eggs at during the obstacle course I set up.

Here the boys are waiting to start the obstacle course.

I wanted them to kind of feel like they were in the video game.  For the obstacle course they had to climb through the tunnels, throw Yoshi's egg at him for the "Yoshi Egg Smash",  fill the bucket with sand, ride on a bike and circle around 3 times, they then had to run under the tramp and pop a balloon which had gold coins in it and grab the coins and then they had to get on the tramp and pop another balloon and get some more gold coins, get off and go through another tunnel and then they were done. They each got gold coins at each station, the balloon pop was what decided who had the most coins.  Whomever had the most coins won.

Then we had the boys play musical mushrooms.  I printed up these mushrooms and laminated them.
I set them on the floor in a circle and had the boys stand on them, then I played some Mario Brothers music that I had downloaded and we played it like musical chairs, taking away a mushroom each turn.
Here are the boys playing it.
Then we played the skittles game.  Have you ever played it?  I first played it at my cousin Heidi's birthday when I was little and I loved it.  Normally you play with a couple of dice and if you roll a 7 or 11 you suck up as many skittles as you can with a straw until some one else rolls those numbers.  So to make it Mario style I made my own dice and put Mario characters on it and every time the kids rolled Mario they got to make their pile of skittles until the next kid got it.  The older kids of the group got the concept but some of the younger kids didn't, probably should have waited a year or two to play that game.  They had fun though.

Then it was time to open presents!

So I had the kids do another thing I always did as a child at birthday parties and at my own parties and that was "Heavy, Heavy Hangover".  Where Dax closes his eyes and I pick one of his friends and they grab their gift to him and say the little saying in a funny voice and bop him on the head with the present and he has to guess who it is.  After listening to the saying I realized it probably wasn't appropriate for kids to say, don't know why I never noticed as a child, you know talking about hangovers and stuff, I should probably make up my own version.  Anyways, despite that they didn't think anything of it and thought it was fun.

Then it was cupcake time and time to sing to the birthday boy!
The birthday crew!  Mckynlee, Daxton, David, Luke, Mathew, Brendan, Carter, Eli, Davis, Aiden, Jackson, Daylen, Jacob and Brock.
It was definitely crazy having all those boys over, especially when they were all on the tramp.
Daxton's loot.  He had a great party, I had stressed about it, but it turned out and he loved it.
